 Gloucester is America's oldest seaport and was first incorporated as a town in 1642. Due to its strategic location along the Atlantic ocean and the invention of the schooner in 1713, seaside pursuits in Gloucester became very profitable. In the 1800s, many foreign workers from Canada, Portugal, and Italy migrated to Gloucester to work in its ever-profitable fishing industry, as well as to escape discrimination that they faced within other New England communities. One of the largest communities in Gloucester is its Italian-American community, which holds the "Blessing of the Fleet" ceremony every year in order to honor St. Peter, the patron saint of fisherman.

From the collection of Fred Bodin of Gloucester, MA. Fred was a long time resident and well-known photographer of Gloucester and had one of the best private collections of New England nautical photographs in private hands. Fred was a photojournalist having graduated with this degree from Syracuse University and worked for Yankee Magazine. Fred passed away in 2016 and HIP purchased his collection from his estate.
