Welcome to History in Photographs

“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.” - Irving Penn
"A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you, the less you know." - Diane Arbus

History in Photographs (HIP) is a collection of more than 50,000 photographic negatives, and here, at HistoryInPhotographs.com, we’re sharing the very best of these images with you. We’re always on the lookout for amazing photography taken by amateurs and professionals alike. Once we find what we love, we procure the rights to share them with our users. Each image is meticulously restored by our team so that you can experience our negatives in their fullest glory. The HIP collection is nearly 200 years in the making, and we hope you enjoy exploring its many facets.

In addition to our visual archives, HIP aspires to become an informational hub for those who want to learn more about collecting photographs and negatives. We’re excited to share our passion with you by providing access to resources that can help you build your own stellar collection. Here at HIP, we’re bringing together all kinds of experts, from curators and appraisers to historians and artists, to help tell the story of our collection and give you some guidance for your own photo pursuits. Visit our blog to learn from an array of experts and deepen your own understanding of this incredible medium. We hope that you’ll enjoy our collection and also be part of our community.

No matter where you are in your collecting journey, we’re happy to have you come along with us as we celebrate our favorite photographs and continue to learn.
