Along with his photographs of strangers on the street, soldier and photographer George Sakata often documented the ruins of World War II. Here is another such image. Just looking at this photograph cues the soundtrack of Carol Reed's "The Third Man" in my brain (which, granted, takes place in Vienna, not Italy). Even so, I can't stop imagining that haunting film and the many shells of destroyed buildings that set the stage for the movie's mysteries. This equally eerie moment brought to you by George Sakata.
