This man strikes a simple pose for the camera as he holds his straw hat by his side. Unlike other subjects, this man's body doesn't take up as much space nor is there much energy behind his eyes. He doesn't command the camera, as some of Trefry's other subjects do. Indeed, there is a sense of awkwardness and even reluctance in the way that he holds himself, as if he is unsure of how to pose for the camera. Don't we all know that feeling? It's especially difficult when you're posing alone and you have no one else to imitate. I feel for this guy, who looks so much like an island in the middle of this open space. This photograph was taken near the resort town of Rye, New Hampshire around the turn of the century.
