Transportation

It Beats Walking.

The evolution of the photographic medium runs parallel to the development of mass consumer transportation. During the first century of the American experiment, an average person's modes of transport remained largely unchanged. However, big developments were underway with the advent of the steam engine and the expansion of the railroads. By the end of the Civil War, the machines of transportation and the machines of photography moving growing at a serious pace.

This collection follows this intertwined evolution, from steam ocean liners in the late 19th century, to the birth of commercial air travel in the 1920s, and into the heyday of the U.S. Interstate system. From riding the rails to riding through the clouds, this collection is here to give you an adventure through transportation history.
