The Photography of Clarence Trefry

The work of photographer Clarence Trefry is both reserved and subversive, subtle yet striking. He was active around Rye, New Hampshire for decades, starting in the 1890s. These particular portraits, snapped around the turn of the century, are so interesting to us because of their racial and socioeconomic diversity (not to mention their beautiful exposures and excellent depictions of vintage swimwear).
