Dutch passenger ferries are lined against a dock on a beautiful day in 1950s Holland. As the ferries are stationed along the harbor, several crewmen stand beside the boats as they appear to be loading or unloading materials from the ferries. Wooden buildings line the left side of the harbor along the mostly-empty road, adding to the still atmosphere of the harbor on such a lovely, calm day.

With over 26% of its land mass located below sea level, many canals have been built throughout Holland and have played a central role in the construction of cities since the 17th century. One such city that is known for its canal system is Amsterdam, and while the canals are used to keep its cities above water, they also greatly aid transportation around the city. Not only are there passenger boats that travel through the waterways, but also restaurant boats and houseboats.

  Taken by George Sakata, a photographer featured throughout our website. George was a member of the infamous 100th Division 442nd Nisei Regimental Combat Team in WWII. This was the only Japanese American unit in WWII and was nicknamed the "Go For Broke" unit.
