Loud in the Shadows

Fred Bodin

$24.99

At first, I struggled to understand why I felt so drawn to this photograph, and I'll admit that even now, I don't completely have a handle on it. Even so, I find many elements of this photograph to be very striking: those folded arms, the hard facial expressions, and the juxtaposition between the women in the foreground and the scene in the background. It's odd to me that the body language of the two subjects feels so, well, loud, and yet they are shunted to the edge of the frame. The photograph both amplifies and decentralizes their emotions. The photographer literally kept them in the shadows and yet, their postures are still perhaps the most engaging part of this image. Was this dynamic accidental or intentional? That we can never know, but it is delightful nonetheless. This image comes to us from the Fred Bodin collection. Fred was an avid collector and a professional photographer himself. He worked for "Yankee Magazine," a prominent New England publication. Over the course of his life, Fred collected photographic prints and negatives from various photographers around New England, and after his death in 2016, HIP purchased the bulk of Mr. Bodin's collection. We're excited to share the best of it with you.
