Three Gazes

Fred Bodin

$24.99

So many mysteries to contemplate in this impromptu portrait. I'm curious about the paisley curtain in the window and the book these women are holding. Is it a hymnal, a Bible, or a work of fiction? Were they reading together? Or is this book an intentional prop designed to meet a particular purpose? I also love the fact that all three of these women are looking in slightly different directions, which makes me feel extremely curious about what all might be happening outside the confines of this composition. This particular gem comes to us from the collection Fred Bodin, an avid collector and photographer who lived in New England until his death in 2016. Fred collected the photographs of many New England photographers, including the work of his grandmother, Alice Curtis. While we can't say for sure who snapped this pic, the dating of this shot (around the turn of the century) suggests that it could have been taken by Ms. Curtis.
