A prominent black hazard marker is positioned on a small island in the waters of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The iron marker is painted black and consists of several tiers with ridges on its side. The clouded sky above suggests that a storm is on the rise. 

The waters of Gloucester provided its citizens with an abundance of seaside resources, as well as strong advantages in the seafood and sea traveling industries. However, its waters are also exceptionally turbulent: ever since Gloucester was first settled, its waters have claimed around 10,000 lives, if not more. Most of the accidents result from unstable conditions due to violent storms, which is why the hazard markers and lighthouses are so vital: they not only guide sailors towards the shore, but also warn them of dangerous territories that lie ahead.

From the collection of Fred Bodin of Gloucester, MA. Fred was a long time resident and well-known photographer of Gloucester and had one of the best private collections of New England nautical photographs in private hands. Fred was a photojournalist having graduated with this degree from Syracuse University and worked for Yankee Magazine. Fred passed away in 2016 and HIP purchased his collection from his estate.
