Two Kids Waiting for Customers

George Sakata

$24.99

Two young Italian boys sit and face each other at a shoe shining station. They don't appear to be at work and are probably waiting for customers to appear. Sunlight shines around them. One of them is sitting on a wooden block that was used to prop up the customer's shoes while they were being cleaned. During World War II, most Italians struggled to stay afloat. Many took desperate measures to provide for themselves, and children were not immune from these dire straits. This particular portrait of wartime struggle is brought to us by photographer and solider George Sakata, who was a member of the 442nd RCT, the most decorated unit in all of U.S. military history.
