The expansion of English, Spanish, and Dutch settlements in North America during the 1600s brought about an influx of culture, and also architectural influences. The colonizers used architectural elements from their own countries in combination with the resources that were available to them in America to construct these "colonial" houses, so named for the era of colonization. Colonial houses in Cape Cod, for example, would include elements of the traditional English style, but also new features that would protect the houses from the harsh coastal weather. While there are certainly many modern houses that include traditional elements of the colonial style, some of the earliest colonial houses can still be found throughout the country, especially in the New England area.

 From the collection of Fred Bodin of Gloucester MA. Fred was a long time resident and well-known photographer of Gloucester and had one of the best private collections of New England nautical photographs in private hands. Fred was a photojournalist having graduated with this degree from Syracuse University and worked for Yankee Magazine. Fred passed away in 2016 and HIP purchased his collection from his estate.
