Its front entrance is styled with Greek-revival columns, adding to the grandeur of the hotel. The Park Hotel, more commonly known as the "Astor House", was constructed by John Jacob Astor, the nation's first-ever multimillionaire in 1836. John was a descendant of the wealthy and prominent Astor family, whose wealth was rooted in the fur-trading industry. His fortune allowed him to purchase a sizeable lot in New York to commission the hotel, whose design was described as "severe and granite-faced ... a doughnut, a plain one, practically unrelieved by decoration or detail". Yet despite its subdued appearance, the hotel quickly grew to be the most famous of its time and served a large number of distinguished guests, even Abraham Lincoln.

 From the collection of Fred Bodin of Gloucester, MA. Fred was a long time resident and well-known photographer of Gloucester and had one of the best private collections of New England nautical photographs in private hands. Fred was a photojournalist having graduated with this degree from Syracuse University and worked for Yankee Magazine. Fred passed away in 2016 and HIP purchased his collection from his estate.
