A coastline view of Oceanside Hotel in Magnolia, Massachusetts in 1905. Even from afar, the silhouette of the building stands out prominently against the shoreline. A vast cluster of trees surrounds the hotel on both its left and right sides.The water in front of the hotel appears calm and steady, drawing more attention to the hotel as its ominous silhouette lurks in the background. The simple, placid sky highlights the many details of the hotel and its surroundings.

Built in 1878, the Oceanside Hotel in Magnolia was the second largest hotel in New England at the time of construction. The hotel had 400 rooms and was one of the biggest social hubs during its main operation. Many people shared fond memories of the hotel, most notably their summer experiences, because Magnolia was a popular vacation destination in the summer. Before the establishment was burned down in 1958, Magnolia was known to attract big-name celebrities in the music and entertainment districts, such as John Philip Sousa and Lucille Ball. The hotel was completely burned to the ground on the early hours of a winter morning in 1958 and has never been reconstructed. 

 From the collection of Fred Bodin of Gloucester MA. Fred was a long time residen and well-known photographer of Gloucester and had one of the best private collections of New England nautical photographs in private hands. Fred was a photojournalist having graduated with this degree from Syracuse University and worked for Yankee Magazine. Fred passed away in 2016 and HIP purchased his collection from his estate.
