Two women walk through an empty Italian street sometime during World War II. Although many of Sakata's snapshots are full of activity, this one feels a bit eerie in its emptiness. The closed-up storefronts in the background give this image an added sense of isolation, which is only heightened by the large distance between the two women. This snapshot of wartime estrangement is brought to us by soldier and photographer, George Sakata, who was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
