With the Grandchildren

Alice Curtis

$24.99

An outdoor portrait of three children and two adults, who appear to be their grandparents. We know relatively little about this image, but the clothing offers a few hints. Oversized white bows reached peak popularity during the Edwardian Era, so we predict that this image was taken sometime before 1910. While bows were used as class symbols earlier in the 1800s, their meaning shifted over the course of the 19th century. By the time this photo was taken, bows were used increasingly to distinguish gender, not class. Snapped by local Gloucester photographer, Alice Curtis.
