Sunlight streams down on a road thickly lined with palm trees in Italy. The leaves of the trees droop down, creating a dense thicket and completely covering the sky from behind. Several white, cottony clouds peak out from above and compliment the rich color of the tree leaves. Below the palm trees, a variety of small plants and shrubs grow at the base, and a thin fence made of either rope or wire separates the plants from the dirt road. A wooden sign reading the word "SLOW" is positioned in front of the plants and advises vehicles to take caution as they travel down the narrow road. Fortunately, no vehicles were traveling the road at the time of the photograph, allowing Sakata to display the full beauty of the pathway.

This panoramic view of palm trees on the edge of a dirt road in Italy is an example of the beautiful, and even tropical, scenery of the country. The plants are well-maintained and the dirt road is clean, indicating that the area is cared for properly. The photograph gave a glimpse of the future success of Italy as one of the economic leaders following the second world war by displaying the care the country possessed for its environment and the discipline imposed on its citizens.

Taken by George Sakata. George was a member of the infamous 100th Division 442nd Nisei Regimental Combat Team in WWII. This was the only Japanese American unit in WWII and was nicknamed the "Go For Broke" unit. The 442nd had a casualty rate of 93% and was awarded 21 Medal of Honors. George Sakata is featured throughout our website. For more information on the 442nd RCB unit.
